yay stillers! i had fun watching the game on sunday and i hope you did too!
here are some stories and adventures from the past few days. not all of them are exciting, but such is life.
1. gerrit sent me kindereggs in an egg carton along with a bunch of other german chocolate and that makes me happy. and fat. woohoo!
2. friday night was hula hanks happy hour #3. i will post pictures later i promise. we all had fun at hula hanks and got really drunk and then a few of us (rajini, meisha, jen hardee, and tom) went to gpscy. i went in hopes that the cute bartender would be working, but alas, he was not. we hung out for a while and i had a long conversation about something with jen hardee sitting on the couch. then this random guy comes up and asks if he can sit on the other end of the couch. we don;t care. but then he forces himself upon our conversation and wraps his arm around my waist and leans over me so he can talk to both me and jen. a little forward but hey. so we talk for a while and jen had to leave so i continued talking to him. we had a relatively normal conversation about what we study, and i tried to explain why i'm interested in science and specificly molecular biology and biological mechanisms of neuroscience. he didn't get it and the conversation got slightly awkward. when i said i had to go home he offered to drive me which was nice. he drove me home and of course then invited me over to his place. i was mean and told him no i have to go to bed now because i'm tired and he drove away. sometimes one is just not in the mood to have a one night stand.
3. last night was my first night working the door at the grad student pub gpscy. it wasn't terribly exciting.... i got to help set up the bar (by getting ice and garbage cans) and set up chairs and stuff and then spent the next 5 hours checking ids at the door. 21 people came to watch the canadian elections. oooo how exciting. aparently the conservative guys won or something. but i think it will be a good job and all the peopel that work there are really nice. i get to drink for free while i'm working and i get $1 whenever i go to the bar from now on. and that is really nice. last night i had a whiskey sour while sitting at the door reading all my papers for classes for the week. since a new bartender was training i also had an appletini when she was practicing making them. even though i officially clocked out at 1:20, i stayed until about 2am hanging out with people. they started watching serenity, which i have already seen, and when the other two girls left i got a ride home with them. i will probably continue to work one night a week, maybe two over the summer. since a lot of people are graduating in the spring it's possible that i might move up to bartending at the end of the summer. and that would be awesome.
4. yesterday, my pcr finally worked correctly after i had been playing with the conditions and adjusting things for three weeks. hooray!! so now i am moving along with the cloning and in another few weeks i will have transgenic worms! also, i got to set up crosses so that i can do the other part of my project and study serotonin levels in worm neurons. woohoo. my lab is going bowling adn drinking on friday night which promises to be a lot of fun, although i will be missing hula hanks happy hour #4 (i filled out a card to try to win more so missing #4 is really no big loss). i'm excited about lab bowling!
5. tonight is my second hip hop class which will also be fun. i think i'm going to buy a copy of pride and prejudice to read in my free time (which is slowly dwindling, hooray, i hate having free time). and then i will make a wonderful dinner!
6. my a capella group continues to kick lots of ass! we know three songs. i arranged (preliminarily) ben folds five's "song for the dumped" so hopefully we will start learning that soon too. i can't wait until we get to perform in front of real people and we are all awesome and impressive. woohoo!
7. classes are kind of poopy. i'm taking two seminars and a lecture/seminar class. the two seminars are huge-- ~20 people or so-- which is way too big to have a productive discussion about a paper. usually 15 poeple is ideal. my lecture/seminar class has 15 people so it's a good size, but no one talks in the seminars so it also sucks. i hate talking all the time in class.
8. next weekend is the bbs recruitment weekend, and i am hosting a student. it should be lots of fun and partying and drinking and stuff. hooray free food and drinks!!
in general life is good. occasionally, it's a bit lonely and boring and i still can only sleep on one half of my bed (fluffies sleep in the other half), but mostly, all is well.
pudgy is still wearing my terrible towel as a cape and it is cute!
